Site Design Under Construction

As you may be noticing, this page has been going through several changes today as I restructure and redesign it to its new form. My apologies if this is distracting or difficult to look at. In the end, it will be worth it, but for now, it does look like a mess.

Please stick with me as I make these transitions to a new layout as I'm working with other people's code, so I don't always know where the information I want to change is located, so it may take a few days for everything to start looking normalized again.

Thanks for your patience.

Precursor Predictions: Annie Awards & USC Scripter

Saturday, the Annie Awards and USC Scripter award winners will be announced. If they are available before I close the site down, I will post them. Otherwise, it may have to wait until after.

But, until then, I'm posting our contributor's fearless predictions for those awards. While my contemporaries are voting only on the Animated Feature category, I will make predictions in all of the other categories. We'll start with the Scripter and then finish with the Annie Awards. I'll list the nominees in each category and then bold the prediction with the name of the predictor to the side.

Times, They Are A Changing

Starting late Saturday night, early Sunday morning, I will be transitioning this site to a new one. In order to do this, I will need to stop all updates to the site before the transition. My intention is to keep your login info and settings the same in the transition, but I make no promises.

If all goes smoothly, it will be back up and operational later in the day on Sunday. If not, I don't know. Thankfully, we've got a nice lull between the Oscar nominations and anything of significant importance (the Annie Awards and the USC Scripter award are it for the next week). Hopefully you like what I will be doing with everything.

When everything is said and done, for a short period of time, there will be an automatic re-direct, but you WILL need to change your bookmarks at that time or else they will stop working after that period. How things will be transferred after that time has no been decided.

Just giving everyone a heads up that while they may still be able to post after this time, their posts may get lost in the transition.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

The DVD Report #141: February 2, 2010

One of the year’s most eagerly anticipated films, Mira Nair’s Amelia turned out to be one of the year’s biggest disappointments.

On a technical level, the film looks great. The period detail of the period from 1928 to 1937 is letter perfect and the recreation of the planes flown by Amelia Earhart are stunning, but the long, dull screenplay saps the film of its energy.

Hilary Swank is probably incapable of giving a bad performance and her incarnation of the aviatrix, the most famous woman of her time, fully captures the legend. Her look, walk and speech all convey the real Amelia, but it’s all surface acting. We never get to know what the character is really thinking.

Entirely too much screen time is given to Richard Gere, who sleepwalks through his co-starring role as Amelia’s husband, publisher George Putnam. Far better are Ewan McGregor as flight instructor Gene Vidal (Gore’s father) and Christopher Eccleston as Fred Noonan, the navigator who went missing with Amelia in her plane over the Pacific.

7 Days to Oscar Morning: Day 7

If you've made it this far, you'll recognize that there's only one category left. Well, for those who are actually counting, there are two. Best Picture is what we'll be discussing today. The Live Action Short Film category has not had an official list released by the Academy, so we won't be covering it this year, perhaps next year. But, for now, Best Picture is what you get.

For those of you who don't know, tomorrow morning, around 5:35a PST (6:30a MST, 7:30a CST, 8:30a EST), the Academy will announce its 82nd Annual Academy Awards Nominations. Only ten categories will be announced live, but 24 will be in competition. If you haven't already printed out your tracking sheet or checked out the Oscar Morning primer I put together, do so at this link: Oscar Morning.
